We said goodbye to our sweet Chinook a couple of weeks ago. Herewith a couple (OK a ton) of photos.
We tried, for a very short time, to train him as a service dog. The failure of that project was a reflection only on us. Well, and you can sort of sense his attitude in this picture.
He loved to swim:
He loved to roll:
His human friends:
His canine friends (the first one is actually his dad!):
And of course his best friend:
From our holiday card a few years ago; truly sums up their personalities!

Maybe he wasn’t a service dog, but it certainly looks like he was an unofficial therapy dog. Lovely boy… I loved raising Goldens. Godspeed, Chinook.

I’m shocked, shocked to learn you let your puppy put paws in the dishwasher. We would never do that. We would never let cats run over the countertops, either. Despite having a house filled with animals, we never detect cat or dog hairs in the food. (What’s the line from Casablanca? “I’m shocked to learn there’s gambling on the premises.”) Seriously, seeing the photos of Chinook and Saguaro together encourages me to think about getting another puppy, soon, to keep Gabby company. Good-bye Chinook!

What a wonderful photo-essay about your dog. I happened to chance upon it because I was looking for a picture of a puppy in/ near a dishwasher. I have a golden retriever – Tigger – and I believe his personality is very similar to Chinook (loves to roll, can never be a service/ guard dog, love to chase balls but also a ‘world peace’ kind of a dog). I hope by now you have another dog in your life to continue the joy.
I would like to request your permission to use the dishwasher picture for an article I am writing on the drought situation in California and so the utility of dogs in cleaning plates 🙂 Please let me know if you would be ok with it. I’d be happy to share the article with you when/ if it gets published.
Thanks very much.

Hi Amy, thank you again for allowing Chinook to help with the drought in California. The article I wrote is now up – and Chinook is right in the middle of it. Here’s the link to that article if you’d like to take a look.
